I had once wanted to build my own content marketing platform to offer as a service to small businesses. The plan was basically to cobble together a cheaper version of Contently or NewsCred.
What is content marketing?
Content marketing is described as “the marketing and business process for creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action”.
If you remember the advertorials you used to see in print magazines, content marketing is basically the Internet equivalent of that.
How the platform will work
The platform will be a way for businesses to order an article/advertorial about their business or industry (linking back to their website or mentioning their company). Said article when then be published on a website or blog related to their business and promoted on social media channels. The platform covers writing, publishing / distribution and promotion.
The client pays one fee. With this you must pay the writer, pay the website it will be published on (as a sponsored post), and pay for limited promotion of the article what is left is your profit.
The simplified process will look something like this:
Order is placed > 1. Article is written > 2. Article is published > 3. Article is promoted.

Try to partner with a top website is every niche. If you cannot then a popular general website such as About.com will work as well to publish the article on. I had wanted to build out a popular website with a good domain and split it into various topics but looking back this is too much work, partner with existing websites and just manage the platform.
3. Promote the article
When I plotted out my platform, I had only considered social media marketing. As an example of how I intended to promote an article, I looked at a service called Viral Content Buzz where you basically pay to have a link shared across social media.
The best way to charge in this business is packages. Starting at one article, writing, publishing and promotion and then offer bundles of five or ten articles monthly.
The platform is basically all these three components rolled into one. The writing will be outsourced, the publishing will be outsourced and the promotion will be outsourced. You just operate the platform.
